"The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) is pleased to announce Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) as the recipient of the 2024 Jay Hollingsworth Speas Airport Award for their innovative airport microgrid project, which not only saves costs but also reduces emissions...

Developed in collaboration with Peoples Natural Gas, IMG Energy Solutions, and CNX, the microgrid, powered by natural gas and nearly 10,000 solar panels installed on a capped landfill, effectively utilizes otherwise unusable land. PIT plans to expand the solar array in the future, further reducing carbon emissions by over 6 million pounds annually and saving over $1 million yearly for the airport and its partners."
